Education

There is no state provision of nursery school education in The Gambia, so the Albaraca Nursery School provides an important educational service in the community in preparing children for primary school. Feedback from local primary school teachers is appreciative of the head start that Albaraca gives in education. Some of our ex-pupils have also graduated from universities in the Gambia and elsewhere in Africa.

The charity’s stated aim is to provide quality nursery education through the provision of good resources, well trained teachers, and enjoyable and varied learning.

The approach to learning has definitely changed in the last few years and trustees have been encouraging the teachers at the school to promote more independent learning through games and educational toys that have been sent to the school.  These enable them to learn language and numbers in all sorts of interesting ways.

Much of what is learnt at Albaraca is done through the medium of music and song. For example one of the main methods of teaching English is through the teacher and class taking turns in singing. Furthermore there is an enthusiastic school band which welcomes visitors when they first arrive at the school.
